Susan Winslow (Darleen Carr) was a freelance art designer and Mr Joseph X Callahan (William Bogert) was her boss.
Susan had a baby boy called Edmund Hillary Winslow (named after Sir Edmund Hillary, who was the first to scale Mount Everest) but had decided not to marry the father of the child because she didn’t love him.
He moved to Brazil and she was left to fend for herself.
Susan’s father Warren (Elliott Reid) was a pharmacist, and her socially prominent mother, Evelyn (Sarah Marshall), tried to keep her daughter’s “situation” a secret from those in her circle.
Both parents continually tried to get her married. Many friends and other members of her family shunned her.
Susan lived in apartment number 36, while her neighbour in apartment 35 was cranky, sarcastic Harold Devore Nelstadter (Roscoe Lee Browne) who created crossword puzzles for a living and, despite his gruff exterior, really had a heart of gold and watched the baby while Susan was at work.
The short-lived series was based upon the British TV show Miss Jones and Son.
