Radio’s Junior Choice host, former Crackerjack compere and regular Look-In contributor Ed Stewart hosted this lunchtime pop show from Yorkshire Television featuring puppets miming to old hits given a spin by Stewpot.
The puppets included Elton John, Cliff Richard, Lulu (pictured below), Gary Glitter, Cilla Black, Elvis Presley, Tommy Steele and the female backing group, The Ladybirds.
The show also featured filmed appearances by The Osmonds and chats with leading pop stars, including David Cassidy, Gary Glitter (not the puppet version), Noddy Holder of Slade, and Brian Connolly of The Sweet.
Premiering on 25 July 1974, the “holiday series” aired on ITV at 12:25 pm on Thursdays for six weeks. The final episode aired on 5 September 1974.
The various pop star puppets were designed and made by Southport puppeteer Roger Stevenson (the creator of Ken Dodd‘s Diddymen puppets). The heads – with fibreglass faces, leather mouths and real hair – were provided by a sculptor in Coventry.
Ed “Stewpot” Stewart died on 9 January 2016 following a stroke. He was 74.
