Dr James Whitman (Roy Thinnes) is not your ordinary run-of-the-couch psychiatrist. He is tall, blonde and handsome, and he sports longish hair and granny glasses.

His techniques are sometimes unorthodox, which brings him into conflict with the establishment and, occasionally, with his own father figure, Dr Bernard Altman (Luther Adler).

Dr Altman can usually be counted on to warn Whitman that he’s “moving too fast” or “letting your personal feelings foul up your professional judgement”.

One episode found Whitman battling for a controversial methadone maintenance programme. The NBC series was set in Los Angeles.

The Executive Producer was Norman Felton (The Man From U.N.C.L.E and Dr Kildare).
