Filmed on moors near Taunton, Silver Blaze was adapted by Julian Bond and directed by John Davies from the Arthur Conan Doyle story The Adventure of Silver Blaze.
The production was part of an anthology series titled Classics Dark and Dangerous, co-produced by Harlech Television and the Ontario Educational Communications Authority.
Sherlock Holmes (Christopher Plummer) and his dutiful assistant Dr Watson (Thorley Waters) are called in to investigate the disappearance of the famous racehorse ‘Silver Blaze’. Shortly after the disappearance, the horse’s trainer is found murdered on the moors.
Plummer’s interpretation of a pale and weedy Holmes is notable for playing up the detective’s drug addiction. The actor said: “I have spent years researching Sherlock Holmes and the way he should be played. Conan Doyle never intended Holmes to be the robust, healthy hero so often seen. He was pallid, sinister and a cocaine addict, a victim of drugs”.
