Following the very public breakup of Sonny and Cher’s marriage, ABC hoped they could replace their successful Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour with a solo outing from Mr Bono. The network said at the time, “We don’t intend to hide the divorce. We want to hit it head-on. We want to be honest.”
Using the same producers (Chris Bearde and Allan Blye) they came up with The Sonny Comedy Revue, debuting on Sunday 22 September 1974.
Sonny played the same downtrodden sad-sack character, but also introduced some new regular spots, including recurring skits about great lovers in history (Sonny as Casanova, Julius Caesar et al), ‘The Bono Brigade’ (Sonny as an Army private), and some musical-comedy numbers presented as ‘The Bono Italian Family Theatre’.
A supporting cast of players from the old Sonny & Cher days backed him up, including Freeman King, Teri Garr, Peter Cullen, Ted Ziegler, Billy Van and Murray Langston.
Guest stars included Glen Campbell, Dyan Cannon, Charo, Joey Heatherton, Jim Nabors, Barbara Eden, Jill St John, Jerry Lewis, Twiggy, The Hudson Brothers, James Brolin, McLean Stevenson and Gladys Knight & The Pips.
