After the cancellation of the original Star Trek TV series in 1969, NBC and Filmation put together this animated continuation, bringing the final year of the five-year voyage of the USS Enterprise to Saturday morning television, with most of the original cast voicing their characters.
Originally, the series was not going to include George Takei and Nichelle Nichols due to budget considerations.
When Leonard Nimoy learned about this he refused to join the cast unless his friends were included and Filmation agreed to sign on Takei and Nichols.
Because of the low budget, James Doohan, George Takei, Nichelle Nichols and Majel Barrett all voiced many of the extra crewmen, aliens and guest characters in the series.
Since the new series was animated rather than live-action, new alien characters were added, including Lieutenant Arex, a three-armed, three-legged member of the bridge crew, and Lieutenant M’Ress, a cat-like alien crew member.
Filmation did a remarkable job of recreating the original Enterprise interiors: the accuracy of the costumes and production design – including tricorders, communicators, the transporter console and familiar bridge – was astonishing.
