This 13-part drama series by John Finch (author of A Family at War and Sam) centred on the life of 43-year-old public relations consultant Harry Shaw (Ronald Hines) who returned to his father’s farm in Yorkshire to find his roots after 20 successful years in the bustle of London.
Before he left London, he had some choice words with his old business partner Alan Williams (Michael Latimer), who was having an affair with his wife, Liz (Virginia Stride).
City-bred Liz hated country life and their children – son Jim (Marc Harrison) and daughters Carol (Sylvestra Le Touzel) and Kath (Julie Peasgood) who was expecting a baby courtesy of her recently deceased fiance – felt disorientated.
Harry also felt at odds with the rest of his family who regarded him as a kind of prodigal son.
Michael Elphick played Harry’s younger brother Jack, and Anne Stallybrass his new bride, Gentle. Jack and Harry’s sister, Paula (Patricia Maynard) was a local doctor.
The series was filmed partially on location in the Yorkshire Dales around Settle and Giggleswick.
