Premiering in August 1971, this afternoon game show from NBC was hosted by veteran quiz compere Bill Cullen and featured a trio of contestants bidding from one to four on the number of questions they thought they could get right in each of three categories.
The highest bidder for each category answered yes/no questions for the amount they had bid to try to win ten times the total number of questions bid by the players.
The first player to amass $150 had enough money to buy $20, $30, and $40 squares on the ‘Three on a Match’ board, where the money amounts appeared in three columns divided by four rows of colours (blue, green, red, and yellow). Hidden behind each square was a prize.
The player then tried to match three prizes, tic-tac-toe style. If successful, that player faced two new challengers. Otherwise, they faced a new round with the contestants from the earlier game.
The show changed its format slightly and increased its prize money on 23 April 1973, but the changes didn’t help it beat the competition, As the World Turns on CBS and Let’s Make a Deal on ABC.
