This situation comedy series from Yorkshire Television was set at an independent television company called Pentagon – the newest and smallest company on the network.
The series showed what happens when “where there’s muck there’s brass” newspaper baron Sir Zachary Stein (Raymond Huntley) – who held a large number of shares in the company – appoints ex-army grocer Major Clifford Turnbull (Royal Engineers, Retired) (Michael Bates) as head of the ailing Light Entertainment Department, who proceeds to run things along military lines.
Turnbull’s Finest Half-Hour co-starred Blake Butler as Bernard Pratt, the assistant head of light entertainment; Liz Fraser (wife of the series’ director and producer Bill Hitchcock) as production assistant Faye Bush; Jonathan Lynn as producer Roddy Cheever-Jones; Roddy Maude-Roxby as producer Rex Rivoli; and Leonard Trolley as ageing casting director Jellico Withers.
The six-part series – written by Ken Hoare and Mike Sharland – debuted on Friday 10 November 1972.
