Diane Cilento starred in this 13-part drama series from the BBC as the widow of wealthy industrialist Sir Sidney Clark, who was searching for the truth about her late husband’s past.
Debuting on Monday 18 September 1978, Cilento starred as ex-journalist Diana Clark who, instead of taking on her dead husband’s job, loyally turned her talents to writing his biography – dredging up plenty of shocks along the way (since she had only been married to him for two years).
As she started to research his life, she realised she hardly knew him. One of the earliest surprises involved Sir Sidney’s German lineage and a possible Nazi connection. And why did he buy a flat in Spain? or hide himself away in a nursing home?
Jonathan Browning (Norman Rodway) was a hardbitten hack hard on the heels of the dead spouse’s reputation, planning an unauthorised and mudslinging version of the life story.
Mary Clark (Jean Kent) was the big man’s first wife. Charles Clark (Christopher Gable) was his dissolute son, and Donald Sanders (Edward Hardwicke) was his successor as Chairman – until he disappeared with a lot of money from a subsidiary company and his service revolver!
