This futuristic story featured six members of the Bennett family who were able to transform themselves into indestructible crime fighters via special implanted bionic technology created by Professor Dr Amadeus Sharp, Ph.D.
Sharp’s first subject was Jack Bennett (voiced by John Stephenson), a test pilot who secretly acted as Sharp’s field agent, Bionic-1. On a family ski vacation in the Himalayas, an alien spacecraft triggered an avalanche that buried the entire Bennett family, exposing them to the unusual radiation of a mysterious buried object.
Jack freed himself but discovered his family in a comatose state. Theorising that Jack’s bionics protected him from the radiation, Professor Sharp implanted bionic technology in the others, awakening them.
Afterwards, the family – Jack and his wife Helen, their biological kids Eric and Meg, adopted son JD and foster son “Bunji” – operated incognito as a publicly lauded team of adventuring superheroes, the Bionic Six.
Stories related their exploits as they battled the evils of mad scientist Dr Scarab (in reality, Professor Sharp’s brother, Wilmer) and his henchmen – Glove, Madame-O, Chopper, Mechanic, and Klunk – and his legion of drone robots called Cyphrons.
The series was produced by Universal Television and animated by Tokyo Movie Shinsha.
A line of Bionic Six action figures and vehicles was released in 1986 by LJN Toys Ltd.
