Stephanie Beacham starred in the title role in Central Television’s tale of passion and fashion which aired between 26 May and 18 August 1985.
At the beginning of the series, Connie returns to the UK after several years of sunning herself in Greece. Suntanned but broke and betrayed by her ex-husband (George Costigan), she lands at an airport in the Midlands and blags a ride from flash businessman, Jamieson (Richard Morant), who shortly dumps his wife and leaves behind his comfortable middle-class lifestyle for Connie.
She heads back to Birmingham and with the help of her father, “Hot Pants” Hector (Paul Rogers), Connie is given another chance in the family knitwear business (“The House of Bea”), although her stepmother (Brenda Bruce) and wicked step sister, Nesta (Pam Ferris) – who carries a handbag big enough to fell a buffalo – do not approve of Connie being back.
Beacham described the show at the time as “Dallas for grown-ups or Dynasty with joined-up writing”. To make her heroine so aggressive she ground her teeth enough to alarm her dentist who fitted her with a gum shield.
Ironically the series allowed Stephanie to conquer America – in Dynasty spin-off The Colbys.
Location shooting for the fictional Cawrey’s factory took place at the real Corah factory in Leicester.
