This BBC comedy/drama starred James Bolam as Father Matthew Fitzstanton – a scatterbrained unworldly catholic priest in Fulham (London). Serving alongside Father Matthew in the parish is Father Charlie (Ray Winstone), a rough and ready curate with a love of fruity sauce and Miss England.

Father Matthew finds himself unexpectedly having to take charge of his eight-year-old niece, Holly (Samantha Hurst) who has been orphaned following a plane accident in South America which killed his sister and brother-in-law.

Thankfully, Father Charlie has a solution and suggests that his broody sister, Sharon (Gabrielle Lloyd)  looks after Holly. Despite having four boys of her own, Sharon agrees to take on Holly after Father Charlie plays upon her distrust of adoption agencies and her desire to have a daughter.

Father Matthew’s Daughter aired on Monday evenings at 9 pm on BBC2 in 1987.
