Recently widowed sportscaster (later a morning talk show host) Danny Tanner (Bob Saget) was struggling to raise his three little girls – D.J. (Donna Jo, aged 10), Stephanie (5) and Michelle (six months old) – alone after his wife was killed by a drunk driver.

He turned to his wannabe rock musician brother-in-law, Jesse Katsopolis (John Stamos), and his best friend, Joey Gladstone (Dave Coulier) – an aspiring stand-up comic – to move into his cramped, narrow, two-story Victorian home in the Lower Pacific Heights area of San Francisco with them.

The three men attempted to follow their chosen media-related careers while providing rock-solid examples for Danny’s daughters.

Jesse eventually married Rebecca (Lori Loughlin), Danny’s co-host from his local TV morning talk show and she also moved into the crowded house, along with her twin boys, Nicky (Blake Tuomy-Wilhoit) and Alex (Dylan Tuomy-Wilhoit).

Danny had a long-term relationship with Vicki (Gail Edwards), another talk-show host, which didn’t work out, so Rebecca remained the only wife in evidence.

Various kids’ friends passed through, including DJ’s friends Kimmy (Andrea Barber) and Steve (Scott Weinger), Stephanie’s classmate Gia (Marla Sokoloff), and Michelle’s friends Teddy (Tahj Mowry) and Denise (Jurnee Smollett).

Jesse and his parents, Nick (John Aprea) and Irene (Yvonne Wilder), abruptly changed their surname to Katsopolis in 1990, after his grandparents’ visit from Greece.

fullhouse_004Over the eight years the show was on the air, viewers watched the Tanner children grow up, and by the time the series ended in 1995, baby Michelle (played alternately by identical twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen) was eight years old.

Netflix produced a sequel of sorts – Fuller House – in 2016. DJ was now a recently widowed mother of three young boys, living with sister Stephanie, best friend Kimmy and Kimmy’s teenage daughter.

Candace Cameron Bure, Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber all returned to reprise their roles.

Bob Saget was found dead in his Florida hotel room on 9 January 2022.

An autopsy found that he had blunt head trauma from an accidental blow to the back of his head (likely from a fall) and subsequently died from the resulting injuries in his sleep. At the time of his death, he was COVID-19 positive.

Yes, one of the great presenters. R.I.P.

For fans of the radio series Round The Horne (1965 - 1968) - starring the inimitable Kenneth Williams - there are several full episodes on Spotify. Some of the humour is still pretty close to the edge, even by modern standards. Bona!
