Dad’s Army veteran Clive Dunn played Charlie Quick – who everyone called “grandad” – the caretaker at a community centre called Parkview Hall.
Television director Digby Rigby (Maurice Thorogood) held his rehearsals in the hall, but he and his cast were constantly interrupted by Charlie, whose enthusiasm and desire to help caused endless chaos and confusion.
The villain of the piece was Mr Watkins (Geoffry Russell), a short-tempered local councillor who was always breathing down grandad’s neck.
Charlie also had a pet parrot named Captain Flint and a large (never seen) dog called Nero.
The BBC series was also devised by Clive Dunn and written by Bob Block, creator of Rentaghost. The series made great use of Dunn’s many talents, including roller-skating, unicycling and painting. Not to mention singing the theme tune for the series.
