1 9 8 8 – 1 9 8 9 (UK)
12 x 30 minute episodes
This BBC children’s comedy series focused on young Stephen “Gruey” Grucock (Kieran O’Brien), his friends “Wooly” (Danny Collier) and “Quidsy” (Ayesha Hussain), and his sworn arch-enemy, Nigel “Nidgey” Jackson (Scott Fletcher).
Like Just William, Gruey was disaster-prone and his schemes always ended up badly.
By the second series (Gruey Twoey), Gruey and Wooly were a year older, Quidsy and her parents had moved to London and the shop next to the cafe run by Wooly’s mum, Betty (Maggie Wilkinson) had been taken over by Harry Deluxe (Chris Saunders), a mystery man from Birmingham.
Gruey also had some new friends and – as ever – Gruey’s parents (Jane Lee and Paul Copley) bore the brunt of his schemes and disasters.
Steven Churchett and Sara Coward played the long-suffering Tresswells.
