It’s the late 1980s, and a sinister organisation is patrolling the streets in pursuit of fashion defectives in this short kids’ series from Granada TV. Their mission is to declare war on subversives.
“Detrendifiers” are ruthless stormtroopers who are determined to clean up the streets of illegal modes and outlawed fashion.
This is the reality of life under the National Cool Board, led by the villainous Cashman (Roger Daltrey from The Who).
Dr Benjamin Barnard Walters (Freddie Jones) is the Board’s eccentric scientist who is intent on discovering the formula for “cool particles”, while a mole called Henry Wellington (David Keys) keeps Cashman informed on the subversives’ movements and activities.
“The Frontiers of Style” (FOS) – led by Jacob “Gaf” Smith (Robert McKewley) and ‘The Mighty Gobbo’ (Tristan Maguire) are teenage freedom fighters for fashion liberation.
They pout, preen, posture and pose their way to stardom in outlandish 1980s fashions.
Gary Glitter and Julie Goodyear (better known as Bet Lynch/Gilroy in Coronation Street) appear in cameo roles.
The three-part Granada Television series was adapted from a novel by Philip Pullman.
