Jem and the Holograms was the premier cartoon about a fantasy world of girl-glam rock. It was every little girl’s dream at one point to grow up and be a rock star like Jem.

The cartoon totally encapsulates not only the fashions and language of the late 80s, but also the culture, ideals, and desires of the great decade.

Jerrica Benton was the owner of Starlight Music and the Starlight Foundation (a foster home for young girls).

But by using her earrings to project a holographic image over herself, she was transformed into her alter ego, Jem, the lead singer for the successful music group, Jem and the Holograms. “Synergy power, on!”.

Other members of the group were Jerrica’s sensitive little sister Kimber on “keytar”, the strong-willed Aja on guitar, and the creative Shana on drums (and eventually Raya).

The group’s rivals were The Misfits, made up of the cold-hearted Pizzazz (real name Phyllis Gabor), the tough-acting drummer Roxy (real name Roxanne Pelligrini), English bassist Jetta (real name Sheila Burns) and humble “keytarist” Stormer (real name Mary Phillips).  “We are The Misfits/Our songs are better and we’re gonna get her”.

Jem and her friends were always involved in glamorous and exciting adventures around the world while touching people’s hearts with their hit songs.
