Claire McCarron (Margaret Colin) is a former assistant district attorney turned owner of McCarron Investigations, a private detective agency she operates from an office at 17 West 36th Street in New York City.
Claire guarantees results and charges $500 a day plus expenses – although most of the time, she’s struggling to make ends meet.
She has a dog named Clyde and drives a silver Porsche Cabriolet. The car is always in need of repair and Claire must do a lot of walking to accomplish her goals, hence the title.
Claire lives in a plush apartment at 765 East 65th Street and has a rare collection of pre–World War II Lionel “O” gauge electric trains that she inherited from her father.
She often eats out and the only two foods she can prepare are oatmeal raisin cookies and coq au vin. When a case bothers Claire, she resorts to making cookies.
Claire works with her brother, Fred McCarron (Patrick James Clarke), a lieutenant with the Office of Public Relations at One Police Plaza in Manhattan, and Wilhelmina ‘Willie’ Pipal (Frances McDormand), the Manhattan Assistant District Attorney.
The CBS series ran for a few months in 1987 before being prematurely cancelled. It briefly aired on ITV in the UK.
