1 9 8 1 – 1 9 8 2 (UK)
18 x 30 minute episodes
This bi-weekly BBC-2 series for teenagers aired on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and followed Maggie McKinley (Kirsty Miller), a rebellious 17-year-old girl from a Glasgow council flat in a tower block, and her relationship with James Fraser (Ian Michie), a boy from middle-class Edinburgh.
Maggie was conscious and fond of her roots but determined to go to university to study social anthropology and pursue a career rather than succumb to marriage or babies.
Her parents (Michael Sheard and Mary Riggans) struggled to understand why she didn’t want to settle for a nice job at the insurance office before starting a family.
Several storylines featured Maggie staying with her feisty octogenarian grandmother (Jean Faulds) in Inverness-shire, who frequently acted as an important confidante.
Originally described as a sort of Upstairs Downstairs for teens, Maggie was based on a quartet of novels by Joan Lingard, who also wrote the scripts.
The theme music was by BA Robertson.
