Melba Patterson (Melba Moore) is a newly-divorced mother who works as the director of the Manhattan Visitors Center in New York City. She lives with her daughter, Tracy (Jamila Perry), at 623 Bleecker Street. Tracy attends PS 89 in Manhattan.

Susan Slater (Gracie Harrison) is Melba’s “white sister”, a carefree single girl who works at the Furth and Preston Ad Agency. She was raised by Melba’s mother, Mama Rose (Barbara Meek), when she was orphaned as a young girl and is now looking for a husband and hoping to begin a family

Jack (Lou Jacobi) and Gil (Evan Mirand) are Melba’s co-workers and Virginia (Ellen Tobie) is Melba’s boss.

The series premiered on 28 January 1986 – the same day the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded. It was the lowest-rated prime time evening in the network’s history. The show’s ratings were so low that CBS cancelled it immediately. The remaining episodes aired in August 1986.
