12 x 30 minute episodes

Written by Carla Lane, this BBC sitcom starred Felicity Kendal as Maxine, a young florist who is having an affair with a married man (Jack Galloway), whose wife was played by Jane Asher.

Airing on BBC2 on Thursdays at 9.00 pm, the series was disliked by some television viewers, who were unhappy at seeing Felicity Kendal (best known as the innocent Barbara Good in The Good Life), playing a woman sleeping with someone else’s husband.

The affair was played down in the second series in favour of more general comedy, but the changes were in vain and the show was cancelled after series 2, never to be repeated.

The Mistress was filmed around Bath, Somerset. The florist shop was in Abbey Green, Bath and Maxine’s house location at 26 St Mark’s Road, Bath
