This brief summer replacement series from NBC began when stuffy English Professor Grant Pritchard (Eric Idle of Monty Python fame) and his wife Claire (Caroline McWilliams) were killed in a rockslide while on holiday.
Their spirits returned to their elegant home in the Chicago suburbs but found it now inhabited by the boorish blue-collar Dooley family – which annoyed Grant immensely as he desperately wanted his house back.
Stories related Grant’s continual complaints (to the audience) and his attempts to live with the Dooleys (who could not see him).
The Dooley family comprised ill-mannered plumber Michael (Stuart Pankin), his wife, Liz (Wendy Schaal), their teenage son Derek (Jay Lambert) and Liz’s father, Jack Garrett (Henderson Forsythe) – the only member of the family who can see the Pritchards.
Eric Idle performed the theme, Nearly Departed.
“Just pushing up daisies, we’re halfway to Hades
And halfway to Heaven above”
