“If my pies could move, if my pies could speak, which of my pies would be pie of the week?”
Not to be confused with the 1994 light-hearted police drama series starring Richard Griffiths as the portly Henry Crabbe, this children’s TV show from the BBC featured singing bakers the Pie Man (David Hargreaves) and the Pie Wife (Play School veteran Chloe Ashcroft, who co-created the show with Peter Gosling), who baked delicious pies for the local village children in their pie shop, Universal Pies.
The couple attracted the attention of the Pie Pilot (fellow Play School alumnus Ben Thomas), who arrived from outer space (from planet Pie, natch) to literally “fill the pies with a song”.
Episodes featured sing-alongs, traditional nursery rhymes, and movement designed to get young viewers active.
Following its initial late-afternoon autumn run from 15 September 1986, the show – recorded at the BBC studios in Bristol – moved to a daytime See-Saw slot on BBC1, where it was repeated regularly until 1991.
