6 x 30 minute episodes
This six-part BBC 2 comedy series was set in a boys’ public school and revolved around the long-suffering senior master, Pinkerton (Geoffrey Whitehead), who had been recently promoted to deputy head. Pinkerton was wet but far from stupid.
The idle staff at Lyttelton Old School were largely indifferent and more dedicated to their creature comforts than the education of their pupils. Accordingly, most of the action occurred in the staff common room rather than the playground.
The school’s domestic supervisor, Miss Shilling (Eleanor Bron), was passionate about health foods and yoga. Derek Farr was the boozy headmaster.
Other regular staff members included the Bursar (Paul Hardwick), Beech the English Master (Derek Francis), Flax the French Master (Alan Parnaby), Davies (Clive Merrison), Parsons (David Sibley) and Renfrew (Michael Elwyn).
The episodes (written by Charles McKeown) aired on Wednesdays at 9 pm between 18 May and 22 June 1983.
