Ex-pat American actor Larry Summers (David Andrews) stars as a tough ex-pat American private detective called Pulaski in a popular (fictional) British television series.
In the show within a show, Polish-American Pulaski is a former Catholic priest who is honest, virtuous and moral. He is as brave as a lion and yet gentle as a lamb.
By contrast, Larry Summers is a good Jewish boy turned bad – a low-living drunk and womaniser who has no regard for law and order, has turned cowardice into an art form, and turns white at the sight of blood.
On-screen, Pulaski has a blissful relationship with his girlfriend and sidekick, Briggsy (Caroline Langrishe), who is played by Larry’s actual wife, Kate. Offscreen, the couple fight like cat and dog.
In an attempt to toughen up his real-life act, Larry adopts his Pulaski persona and finds himself embroiled in real-life crime.
The comedy thriller series – written by Roy Clarke, the creator of Last of the Summer Wine and Open All Hours – premiered on BBC 1 on Friday 2 October 1987.
