Rainbow Brite is a young girl on a mission to make the world brighter and hearts lighter by replacing darkness with colour and light using her powerful colour belt.
She is aided in her adventures in Rainbow Land by her faithful companions – a sprite named Twink and an egotitstical talking horse named Starlite – and her closest friends the Color Kids (and, occasionally, an 11-year-old Earth boy called Brian).
Each of the Color Kids is in charge of their respective colour, has a personal sprite and manages a number of like-coloured sprites that mine colour crystals from the nearby Color Caves. These crystals are processed into Star Sprinkles which are the essential components for brightening and colouring any object or place.
Their mission is often interrupted by the evil Murky Dismal, his clumsy and dimwitted sidekick Lurky, his genie Monstromurk and other villains such as The Dark Princess, Count Blogg and Sgt. Zombo.
The animated series debuted in 1984, the same year Hallmark Cards licensed Rainbow Brite to Mattel for a range of dolls and other merchandise. A feature-length film – Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer – was released by Warner Bros. in 1985.
The franchise was rebooted in 2014 with a three-part mini-series released on Hallmark’s online streaming video service, Feeln, starring Emily Osment as the voice of Rainbow Brite and Molly Ringwald as the voice of the Dark Princess.
