The Snorks were kind of like The Smurfs underwater – There was the greedy one, the beautiful female one, the precocious young female, the town mayor, etc . . .
These playful, multicoloured underwater creatures with bubble-sized heads used the built-in snorkels on the top of their heads to dart about and make music.
Most stories – which used light comedy to teach little lessons in life – centered on high school students Allstar (pictured), his tomboy girlfriend Casey, their pals Tooter (who communicated with toots as the name suggests), Dimmy, and Daffney, and their nemesis Junior Wetworth, whose father the Governor was a bombastic blast of hot air.
Occy was Allstar’s pet.
Occasionally seen was “misfit” Snork Jo-Jo, who had a pet fish called Finji and worried about fitting in with the others.
Belgian Freddy Monnickendam had been the original executive producer of The Smurfs, but the relationship between him and Smurfs creator, Belgian cartoonist Peyo Culliford, quickly deteriorated, ending in court cases about the division of the rights and the money involved.
Annoyed by these problems, Monnickendam started a new series of cartoons called The Snorks, which were created and designed by comic artist Nicolas Broca.
Monnickendam acquired all the rights, hoping to equal the success of The Smurfs, but the success of The Snorks was limited, and the series soon ended production.
The New Adventures Of The Snorks was produced in 1988.
