12 x 30 minute episodes
Former childhood sweethearts Bernie Walters (James Hazeldine) and Sylvie Grant (Amanda Redman) are reunited after twenty years and resume their relationship – although their lives have become very different from when they were 17-year-olds growing up in the East End of London.
Sylvie is now a successful and well-off literary agent who calls herself “Sylvia” while James is a black cab driver. He is also a widower, struggling to bring up two children – the precocious Paul (Neil Kagan) and the suspicious Mandy (Anna Murphy).
Also coming between the two is Rene (Diane Langton), the brassy – and jealous – sister of Bernie’s best friend Cliff (Desmond McNamara).
Edna Doré stole the show as Sylvie’s troublesome grandmother, who Bernie nicknamed “granite-faced Gertie”. June Barry was Sylvie’s sympathetic assistant, Jenny.
The 12-part series was written by actress Adrienne Conway and the final episode was left open-ended, suggesting the possibility of a third series. But that was never to be.
