This joint American/English production aired in the UK as Ticket To Ride and on ABC in the US as A Fine Romance (not to be confused with the British sitcom of the same title starring Judi Dench (1981 – 1984).
Michael Trent (Christopher Cazenove) is about to get married for the second time and is looking forward to the peaceful routine of teaching college classes in his native England.
His life had been a globetrotting whirlwind, but the chaos stopped when he ended his association with the popular television travel show Ticket To Ride, which he hosted with his first wife, Louisa (Margaret Whitton), an outrageous and spontaneous American.
Michael’s new fiancee, Ann (Susan Woolridge), is everything that Louisa isn’t – polite, retiring, level-headed.
But unsuspecting Michael is yanked back into the whirlwind when the devious Louisa shows up in Paris and systematically destroys her ex-husband’s wedding plans. She has her reasons.
After their divorce and Michael’s departure from Ticket To Ride, the series began a steady decline in the ratings. Louisa has burned out one boring co-host after another, and the latest, Miles Barrish (Kevin Moore), is the worst yet.
Only Michael provided the proper contrast, and the chemistry can’t be duplicated, and Louisa uses every underhand trick to restore her former husband to co-host status on the show.
Michael realises that he misses the unpredictable life he had with Louisa and agrees to return as her co-host.
Top international locations – including Paris, Madrid, Malta, and Ireland – served as the backdrop to the twelve hour-long episodes with Michael and Louisa at constant loggerheads and driving each other mad.
The series concluded with a brilliantly two-fingered display of bitterness from the production team as the fictional travel show was itself cancelled, and the intrepid lead duo carted off to work on Japanese breakfast television.
