Two Marriages focused on two middle-class families in the Iowa suburbs: Jim and Ann Daley and Art and Nancy Armstrong.
The Daleys were the more contemporary couple: Ann (Karen Carlson) was pursuing a successful career as a construction engineer, even while pregnant with another child, and Jim (Tom Mason) worked at his father Woody’s dairy farm.
Besides their rambunctious six-year-old, Willie (Ian Fried), the bustling Daley household included two children from previous marriages, Jim’s 11-year-old Vietnamese-American daughter, Kim (Tiffany Toyoshima), and Ann’s rebellious teenage son, Scott (C. Thomas Howell).
Across the well-mown lawn were their best friends, the Armstrongs – Art (Michael Murphy), the busy surgeon and Nancy (Janet Eilber), the vaguely dissatisfied homemaker, who kept herself occupied with volunteer work and was always a bit envious of Ann’s independent lifestyle.
Shelby (Louanne) was the Armstrongs’ 15-year-old, sensitive and wise beyond her years, and Eric (Kirk Cameron) their happy-go-lucky young son.
The contrast between traditional and ‘modern’ marriages and the joys and pains of families and friendships provided the stories.
