Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones – who were thrown together in Not The Nine O Clock News and became the nation’s favourite double act in Alas Smith and Jones – presented their new interpretation of the history of the world through the eyes of Hollywood in this LWT series, spoofing the way filmmakers have attempted to depict famous events such as the Battle of Hastings.
The Hollywood classics clearly showed, for example, that Stone Age man spent most of his time trying to work out how to reproduce, everything the ancient Egyptians built fell down, and Queen Victoria was really a vacuum cleaner . . .
A running gag concerned Mel’s ancestors – ie: any bloke who happened to be both stout and bald.
The series was not well received, with many complaining about the language and others comparing it unfavourably to Alas Smith & Jones. The format was altered slightly in the second series, with episodes now focusing on topics such as law, medicine, war, education, the arts and science.
