The syndicated series – based on the popular Sega videogame – was basically nothing more than an updated Road Runner Show, with the differences being that Sonic was a blue hedgehog, had a wisecracking mouth, and was fast enough on two legs that he turned himself into a buzzsaw.
Sonic (voiced by Jaleel White, who had played Urkel in Family Matters) was joined by his young friend Tails (Christopher Welch) to protect the planet Mobius from the evil Dr Robotnik (singer Long John Baldry) and his robot henchmen Scratch (Philip Maurice Hayes), Grounder (Garry Chalk), and Coconuts (Ian James Corlett).
The show also featured a short PSA segment titled “Sonic Says” at the end of each episode.
ABC concurrently aired a weekly series – simply titled Sonic the Hedgehog – with Sonic (still voiced by Jaleel White) involved in a rather serious adventure assisting Princess Sally Acorn (Kath Soucie) to find her father (Tim Curry). Both series’ were produced by DIC Enterprises.
