Carol Lerner (stand-up comic Carol Leifer, who had been a comedy writer and producer for Seinfeldand The Larry Sanders Show) is an attractive unmarried woman who is on the lookout for Mr Right. The problem is, “I meet all the Mr Wrongs”.
She lives alone in an apartment (3D) on Waterton Avenue in Florida and is an optometrist who runs the Collins Avenue Optical Center with her man-hungry best friend Renee Helke (Amy Yasbeck).
Carol is a conservative dresser and a homebody, while Renee is a party girl who wears provocative clothes, flirts with men and feels that showing some cleavage is a ticket for free drinks and dinner.
Adding misery to Carol’s already miserable life are her parents, Alvin (Jerry Adler) and Miriam (Mitzi McCall), and her younger sister, Jessica (Stacy Galina), who lives with her parents at the Flamingo Pines Village Retirement Home.
Alvin and Miriam mean well and feel their intervening in Carol’s life is their way of showing how much they love her. Jessica is a Jill of all trades who can’t seem to find the right job (despite short spells as Carol’s receptionist, a clerk at Spencer’s Department Store, and a doctor’s office receptionist).
Carol’s do-nothing brother, Vaughn (Maury Sterling), does his best to have a life away from the rest of the family.
