Although British detective Reg Toomer (Tim Healy from Auf Wiedersehen, Pet) had lived in Australia for over 20 years, there was only one Bush for him and that was Shepherd’s Bush. However, while pining for his long-lost football team, Queens Park Rangers, he still had a business to look after in Melbourne.

Melbourne Confidential was part-marriage consultancy and part-detective agency, but as long as it paid, any job was considered.

Reg’s unlikely business partner was Aussie Dennis Tontine (Chris Haywood), a man obsessed with women, but who was on the run from both middle age and his former wife.

Also involved were Reg’s daydreaming missus, Doris (Pat Thomson), and their man-hungry, starry-eyed daughter, Arlene (Nadine Garner).

Les (Mark Haddigan) was Reg’s second cousin and Arlene’s on-off lover, who became one of the company’s private eyes. Dodgy tycoon Stuart Stranks (Rob Steele) and his amorous son, Stevie (Russell Fletcher), were added to the cast in the second series.
