In 1930s England, a man from an aristocratic family takes up the pseudonym Albert Campion (Peter Davison) and – with the help of his ex-burglar manservant, Lugg (Brian Glover) – solves crimes (usually murders) and related mysteries.
Referring to himself as a “gifted private individual”, much of Campion’s detection was performed wearing a winged collar (he always dressed for dinner) and he was often aided by moustachioed Inspector Stanislaus Oates (Andrew Burt) of the Metropolitan Police.
Campion lived in Mayfair, of course.
The Lagonda-driving detective in the Harold Lloyd spectacles sprung from the pages of Margery Allingham’s between-the-wars whodunnit stories.
