A blend of variety, talk show and sketch comedy created and hosted by ‘Rampaging’ Roy Slaven (John Doyle) and HG Nelson (Greig Pickhaver) as an offshoot of the duo’s long-running, improvised radio comedy series This Sporting Life which premiered on the Triple J radio network in 1986 and ran until 2008.
Aussie variety stalwart Ian ‘Turps’ Turpie performed as the club president and master of ceremonies for the show, also performing musical numbers and starring in several recurring comedy sketches, including “Turps about the House” in which he played the flatmate of the Nissan Cedrics, police drama “Sam Stain” which also starred TV presenter Indira Naidoo, and Star Trek spoof “Captain Ajax” which featured actor Harold Hopkins as Dogrooter and a sultry cameo appearance from Channel Ten newsreader Anne Fulwood.
The Nissan Cedrics were a singing duo – composed of Dannielle Gaha and Louise Anton – who provided musical links and jingles to introduce guests and regular segments and also occasionally performed full-length songs.
Club Buggery ran for two series of 28 episodes each before being retitled as The Channel Nine Show (retaining the same basic format) for a further series of ten episodes in 1998.
Also in 1998, they took the show to the UK for a season where it was broadcast from Norwich in Norfolk, under the title Roy and HG’s Planet Norwich.
Ian Turpie died in 2012 from oesophagal cancer, aged 68.
