Basing their series on the successful 1995 movie, ABC replaced the wonderful Alicia Silverstone with the bland Rachel Blanchard in the lead role of Cher Horowitz.
As with the original film, the story followed the lives of three wealthy teenage girls – Cher, Dee and Amber – attending Alcott High School, a posh high school in Beverly Hills, California.
Although original stars Stacey Dash (Dee), Elisa Donovan (Amber), Donald Faison (Dee’s boyfriend Murray), and Wallace Shawn (Mr Hall) reprised their roles, ABC – and later UPN – toned down several key elements of the film for this TV adaptation, which lasted three seasons.
In addition to making Cher less self-absorbed and completely tossing out her romantic relationship with her ex-step-brother Josh, the series also shied away from some of the more controversial storylines covered in the film such as teen sex and drug use.
