This BBC series was written by Bernard Ashley, who had previously written Break in the Sun (1981) and Running Scared (1986).
The series followed 13-year-old Simon Leighton (Sean Maguire), whose father (John Telfer) had accidentally run over and killed Simon’s mum, Linda (Erin Geraghty), and was unable to look after his son.
So Simon was sent to a foster home while his grief-stricken dad was in a mental assessment unit.
Teaming up with a fellow resident – a wild girl named Rose Penfold (Lucy Speed) – the pair decided to escape from the home and find their respective parents, hitching a ride with the travelling fairground where Lucy’s dad, Charlie (Trevor Peacock), runs the Tunnel of Love ride.
