Dog City is a metropolis populated by canines – a world created by an artist named Eliot Shag (a Muppet dog voiced by Kevin Clash) whose alter ego is a cartoon character called Ace Hart, Private Eye Dog (seen in animation).

Stories related Ace’s investigations and Eliot’s struggles to complete the stories of the cases which Ace is pursuing. Ace would occasionally stop the action of the cartoon to argue plot points with his creator.

Eliot, meanwhile, found inspiration for his stories from his girlfriend Colleen (who became Ace’s competitor as sleuthing police chief O’Gravy); his neighbour Artie (who became Eddie the newspup, who sold the Dog City Howler and helped Ace solve mysteries); and construction worker Bruno and his idiot assistant Bowser (who became part of a gang that engaged Ace in recurring fights).

The gang consisted of the bulldog Bugsy Vile (the “Dogfather” of Dog City), his gun moll Kitty, and his henchmen Bruiser, Maddog, and Frisky.

The show was a spin-off from The Jim Henson Hour where ‘Dog City’ ran as a short segment.
