One thousand years ago in Scotland, Gargoyles were real, living creatures – physically grotesque but honourable.
During the day the creatures slept frozen in stone. Each night Goliath, the Gargoyle leader, would come to life and awaken his clan to defend the king’s castle.
Despite their noble efforts, humans held the Gargoyles in contempt and one night, when Goliath was lured from his post, villagers overran and ransacked the castle.
The king held the Gargoyles responsible and, in punishment, his sorcerer placed a curse on them.
They fell into what appeared to be an eternal stone slumber and only a castle of greater heights could remove the curse.
In 1994 David Xanatos, a powerful and manipulative businessman, purchases the Scottish castle and transports it to New York City. He places it atop the tallest skyscraper in Manhattan (the Xanacorp Building) and breaks the curse. The Gargoyles are brought back to life.
When police detective Elisa Maza begins to investigate a series of crimes perpetrated against Xanacorp, she finds unexpected help from Goliath, who saves her life and eventually befriends her.
Elisa is the first human to show him friendship and a sense of purpose. She vows to keep the secret of him and his fellow Gargoyles (who have each chosen new names in accord with their new home: Broadway, Lexington, Bronx, Hudson and Brooklyn).
Stories relate the Gargoyles efforts to protect the city from modern-day “barbarians”.
A sequel, Gargoyles: The Goliath Chronicles, aired in 1996.
