This off-beat BBC2 comedy series featured the titular 1970s glam rock band – part Scooby-Doo, part Spinal Tap – who wanted to save the planet with their hit records and were hot on the trail of the evil villain Rolston Brocade (Mac McDonald) – the man who would stop at nothing to hook young kids on his foul drink, Splat!.
The rest of the programme was like continuously channel surfing through a multi-channel TV landscape with spoof commercials and off-the-wall random programme content designed for the short-attention generation.
Regular items included Colin Corleone – a council estate psychotic who thought he was The Godfather; a black & white serial called Betty’s Mad Dash with Sara Stockbridge and Doon Mackichan as 1920s flappers on the run from justice; Bloodsports; an American talk show called The Big Me, with Morag Evans; Mick Jagger’s Hamlet, and various movie parodies.
Glam Metal Detectives was the brainchild of Peter Richardson from The Comic Strip, who also directed five of the episodes.
