6 x 60 minute episodes
This short-lived ABC series featured the (fictional) Harlem Eastside Lifesaving Program (H.E.L.P), an experimental New York City emergency unit that combined paramedics, cops and firefighters.
Episodes detailed the work of Battalion Chief Patrick Meacham (future Frasier star John Mahoney) and his crew: Firemen Jimmy Ryan (Tom Bresnahan) and E. Jean Ballantry (Marjorie Monaghan); Paramedics Mike Pappas (Lance Edwards) and Danny Tran (Kay Tong Lim); and Patrolmen Lou Barton (Wesley Snipes), Frank Sordoni (David Caruso), Larry Alba (Joe Urla) and Suki Rodriquez (Kim Flowers).
Pat’s wife Kathleen was played by Fionnula Flanagan.
Executive producer Dick Wolf had worked on Hill Street Blues and Miami Vice, and the show, filmed in New York, had big production values and an emphasis on action.
In the opening episode alone, the courageous team saved a drowning child, rescued people from a burning tugboat and battled a string of arson-related tenement fires.
