Based on the long-running Australian sitcom Mother and Son, this BBC series starred Stephanie Cole as Peggy Beare, a senile old woman who veers suddenly from lucidity to disastrous forgetfulness and back in a matter of minutes and has become eccentric to the point of embarrassment (and is possibly in the early stage of dementia).
Peggy’s recently-divorced son, Andrew (Martin Ball) feels obliged to live with and care for his elderly mother while his selfish brother Richard (David Haig) and his social-climbing wife Tina (Meera Syal) are no help at all and are happy to let the mildly-depressive Andrew bear all the responsibility.
The series was only intermittently funny and the wintry humour was not well served by the accompanying laugh track which sounded like the audience was laughing at gunpoint.
