Written by crime writer Lynda La Plante, this Channel 4 miniseries revolves around Scott Miller (Tam Williams), a second-year psychology student at (the fictional) South Downs University.
Scott is a naive and impressionable youth who shares a house in Brighton with law student Joe (Paul Bettany) and student nurse Susie (Emily Woof) – who are a couple – and spends his nights playing games on the internet.
He meets “Charlie” (Kathy Brolly) in an internet chat room, where she uses the alias “Rich Bitch”. It turns out she isn’t rich, but the other part is certainly true.
Scott becomes deeply obsessed with the devious Charlie, who knows how to manipulate men with sexuality, drugs and emotional blackmail. At times, her technique seems more than a little hammed up, as if she is auditioning to stand in for Mystic Meg, but Scott is so besotted he doesn’t seem to notice.
Charlie knows her way around the dark and musty corners of the internet, which – on top of everything else – makes her completely irresistible to an addicted net surfer like Scott. Through her, he discovers a world of interactive online porn – and eventually, a CD ROM game called ‘Killer Net’ – about committing the perfect murder without getting caught.
Former Take That star Jason Orange has a cameo as a drug-crazed DJ.
