Michael Hayes starred former NYPD Blue actor David Caruso as the titular lead character, a former NYPD cop who becomes a crusading US attorney for New York’s southern district.
Irish Catholic Michael believed in the letter of the law and would not be compromised. If a person was guilty, he would stop at nothing to get the conviction – no matter who he had to expose to pursue justice.
His background allowed Hayes to bring his unique New York street smarts into the court system, and his knowledge about the links between the political and judicial areas of his work gave him an advantage over his Ivy League colleagues.
Michael lived with Caitlin (Mary B. Ward), the wife of his troubled brother, Danny (David Cubitt) – who was struggling to find his place in society following his release from prison – and his nephew, Danny, Jr. (Jimmy Galeota), who needed all the guidance he could get to avoid following in his father’s footsteps.
The ratings for Michael Hayes were far from spectacular and the show was repeatedly moved around and pulled from broadcast by CBS. Just as the show was beginning to show some strength, CBS pulled it again in 1998 for specials and May sweeps, and the series was cancelled in June.
