Walter Tatum (Billy Campbell) owned his own private investigative firm located at 668 Strand in South Beach in Miami, Florida.
Raised by his grandparents, Nate and Adelaide Tatum (George Petrie and Pat Gellar), since his parents were killed in a plane crash when he was two years old, Walter had been fascinated by police and detective shows on television, which influenced his decision to become a lawyer to help people.
One summer, while working as an apprentice for the Legal Aid Society, Walter saw private detective Gavin Mills (Elliott Gould) help an old lady get her hot water turned back on and realised the detective did more for the lady than a whole team of lawyers could.
Walter quit law school and became an apprentice to Mills, later opening the Walter Tatum Detective Agency.
Gwen Cross (Ally Walker) was the spoiled daughter of wealthy businessman Arthur Cross (Chelcie Ross), who babied Gwen all her life. He eventually arranged a marriage for her – to a man Gwen disliked. She refused to marry and deserted her father and fiancé.
In an effort to find Gwen, Cross hired Walter Tatum. Walter found her but took her side and told Cross he could not find her.
Without any money and desperately needing a job, Gwen became Walter’s receptionist and, ultimately, his investigative partner. She adapted quickly to her new lifestyle but lived in fear that her father would one day find her and she would be forced to go back to a life she hated.
The series ended abruptly three months after its premiere, with Gwen’s relationship with her father still uncertain. She and Walter began a relationship, but this was also left unclear.
