90 x 30 minute episodes
The Manhattan brownstone at 721 West 72nd Street in New York City is home to Robert Peterson (Robert Townsend), his wife, Jerri (Suzanne Douglas) and their children, Zaria, Nicholas and Cece.
There was originally also a 16-year-old son named Michael (Kenny Blank), who left the show after season 3 and was replaced in seasons 4 and 5 by TK Anderson (Tyrone Dorzell Burton), a troubled street teen from juvenile hall who Jerri took under her wing.
Robert and Jerri met in high school, were married at City Hall – at the same time they were renewing their driver’s licenses – and first lived at 103rd and Amsterdam Avenue.
Robert is a professor at New York University. His first job as a kid was at Elmo’s Pet Shop.
Jerri is a lawyer and says, “ the closest I’ve ever been to a trial was watching Matlock (she sits behind a desk under a stack of papers). She does volunteer work for the Women’s Legal Society, and in some episodes, she appears to be a law student, while in others, she has her own practice (Jerri Peterson – Attorney-at-Law).
When they have free time, Robert and Jerri enjoy playing Scrabble.
15-year-old Zaria (Reagan Gomez-Preston) attends Hudson High School (as did her parents). She is a cheerleader and hosts the advice show “Keep It Real” on the school radio station (WHBD). She won the Meritorious Student of the Year Award in her senior year (1999) and a college scholarship. Robert calls her “Zee.”
Nicholas (Curtis Williams) – who envisions himself as a great magician (Nicholas the Great) – attends the William Sherman Grammar School. Cece (Ashli Amari Adams), the youngest, has a plush bear named Mr Fuzzy.
Their favourite dinner is hamburgers and French fries, and when they watch a movie, they have “pizza, popcorn and pork rinds.”
TK is a “D” student at Hudson High, where he is on the school basketball team (the Hippos). He also works at Pookie’s Pizza Galaxy. Zaria is number one in her senior class (and valedictorian)- while TK is dead last at #432.
The Parent ‘Hood was created by its star, Robert Townsend, who also acted as Executive Producer on the show.
