Mary (Christine Taylor, who had played Marcia in the two Brady Bunch reboot/spoof movies) was a free-spirited and vivacious young social butterfly who lived the Manhattan social life to the hilt.
At night she partied with her friends – using her loft as an unlicensed supper club until the cops intervened – but during the day she worked as a clerk at the New York Public Library for her godmother Judy (Swoosie Kurtz), who had been her late mother’s best friend.
Also working for Judy was Wanda (Merrin Dungey), a veteran at the library who found Mary’s flower child attitude a bit hard to take – and training her in the Dewey Decimal System all but impossible.
Mary’s artsy friends included Derrick (John Cameron Mitchell), a cynical gay assistant fashion stylist who ogled Mary’s dates, and Oneal (Matt Borlenghi), a rather dense one-time boxer working as a bartender at the neighbourhood restaurant where Judy hung out.
After ranking 88th in the ratings, Party Girl was scrapped after four episodes by Peter Roth on his first day on the job as Entertainment President at Fox.
Based on a 1995 independent art-house film of the same name.
