Steve Rutledge (Tom Amandes, who had played Eliot Ness in the Paramount reboot The Untouchables) and Alex Chosek (Brad Garrett) were partners in the Chicago-based law firm of Rutledge and Chosek.
The partners had divided the work: Jimmy Stewart-lookalike Steve was an idealist and handled innocent people, while his business partner and best friend, Alex – who was openly gay, ruthless and had no scruples – “handles everything else”.
A notorious ambulance chaser, Alex could milk whiplash for megabucks.
Steve’s wife, Mac (Melinda McGraw) – short for Mackenzie – had recently lost her high-powered job at an advertising agency, and her irresponsible, accident-prone brother Larry (stand-up comedian Larry Miller), had moved into their house and showed no indication of ever leaving
Other regular characters were office secretary Jean (Meredith Scott Lynn), who devoted all her waking hours to being acerbic, and Steve’s spirited Grandmother (Maxine Stuart), who lived in a retirement complex and was getting suspiciously absent-minded.
NBC cancelled the show (which was produced by the Frasier team) after airing just 7 of the 13 completed episodes due to low ratings.
Brad Garrett went on to greater things as Robert Barone on the long-running CBS sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond.
